The Veteran Services Office assists veterans in obtaining Federal and State VA benefits.   Some of the Federal benefits include compensation, medical, pension, and education.  A few of the more relevant State benefits include burial costs, paid education for children, license plates, and tax deductions.  Our office provides a van service for veterans who need transportation to either the Indianapolis or Danville Medical Centers.  We also play an integral part in organizing ceremonies on Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, and Pearl Harbor Day in conjunction with local organizations.  We are also in charge of the distribution of U.S. flags to local cemeteries for deceased veterans.  Every year, our office participates in the Senior Fair held at the Fairgrounds by hosting a booth and Randy Fairchild is on the committee that heads the Fair.

Asbestos Exposure in the Military

Hundreds of thousands of servicemen were exposed to asbestos over decades, especially during the period from 1940 to 1980.  Asbestos was used in construction of naval vessels as well as shore facilities.  All branches of the military used asbestos, which was also widely used in civilian applications. Mesothelioma, a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, has a particularly long latency period, and many servicemen who were exposed years ago are now developing this disease.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has information on health care benefits for veterans. Mesothelioma Web has extensive information on treatment options, clinical trials and has staff on hand to answer questions.
