Our Purpose:

The Human Relations Commission of Tippecanoe County aims to provide all citizens equal opportunity for employment, public accommodations, and housing. The Commission will encourage and promote mutual self-respect and understanding of each other by all groups in the County and promote the guarantee of equal rights to all citizens as afforded by the ordinance of the County, the laws of the State of Indiana, and the Constitution of the United States.

What We Do:

The Human Relations Commission receives, investigates and seeks to adjust all complaints of discrimination coming from residents of Tippecanoe County. Based on its findings, the Commission seeks to correct discrimination by recommending action to public or private agencies that can help eliminate it. The Commission also conducts educational and other programs to increase good will in the community and to assure equal opportunities for all in all phases of community life.
Examples of Discrimination:

A potential employer asks questions of female applicants not asked of male applicants.

You are fired from your job in retaliation for complaining about the company's discriminatory practice.

You can't rent an apartment because, after learning you have children, the landlord tells you it is "for adults only."  Or, when you begin to look pregnant, you are told you must vacate your apartment.

A landlord tells you that a unit is no longer available for rental or purchase when he or she sees that you are not Caucasian.

You are denied seating in a restaurant because of your race when there is space available.

You are denied access to a public facility because of a disability.
What Can You Do?
If you feel that you have been discriminated against and you are a resident of Tippecanoe County, you can file a complaint with the Human Relations Commission.  To file, you need to complete the approved form within 90 days of the act of discrimination.  The complaint form asks you to provide your contact information and details about the nature of the complaint.  Any situation involving employment, public accommodations, or housing may be the subject of a filing.  If you have questions about whether you have grounds for a complaint, you should consult with an attorney or leave a message for the Chair of the Human Relations Commission by phone (765.423.9215).
