County History & Demographics back
Date of Record: March 8, 2005

Welcome! Tippecanoe County is the 8th largest county in Indiana with a 2003 population of 154,848. Purdue University and Purdue's Research Park have played an important part in the development of the area and today we have a diversified community with high-tech companies specializing in life sciences, information technology and advanced manufacturing in addition to traditional manufacturing and industry. We are a regional center for education, employment, shopping, health care, transportation, entertainment, finance, arts, and culture.

Lafayette is the county seat of Tippecanoe County. It was platted in 1825 by William Digby and is situated near the center of the county on the east bank of the Wabash River. According to the United States Census of 1910, it was the only incorporated city in the county. Ninety-five years later there are now incorporated towns of Battle Ground, Clarks Hill, Dayton, Otterbein, Shadeland and West Lafayette, the Home of Purdue University.

Named after the famous 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe and organized in 1826, Tippecanoe County, Indiana is divided into 13 Townships as follows: Fairfield, Jackson, Lauramie, Perry, Randolph, Sheffield, Shelby, Tippecanoe, Union, Wabash, Washington, Wayne and Wea.
