Marriage Licenses

MATRÍCULAS MATRIMONIALES

Marriage Licenses may be issued to couples if one party is a resident of Tippecanoe County. If neither the bride or groom are an Indiana resident,we can only issue a license if they plan to be married in Tippecanoe County.

Who:
Licenses may only be issued to couples that consist of one man and one woman. IC 31-11-1-1 states: Only a female may marry a male. Only a male may marry a female. A marriage between persons of the same gender is void in Indiana even if the marriage is lawful in the place where it is solemnized.

Where:
Individuals who wish to be married must both appear together and in person to apply for a marriage license in the Clerk's Office on the 2nd Floor of the Tippecanoe County Courthouse, 301 Main Street.

Time:
Applications are available from 8:00am until 4:30pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Tuesday, we are open from 8:00am until 6:30pm. Please allow yourself at least thirty (30) minutes to complete the application.

Fees:
Indiana Residents: $20.00
Residents of any other state: $62.00
Only Cash is Accepted for Payment.   The fee includes one certified copy of the marriage license.

Required Documents:

It is no longer necessary for the women to provide proof of immunity to rubella. 

One of the following items is required for each individual:

Valid government issued identification that shows a date of birth and current address. If your driver's license doesn't indicate your correct address, bring something with you (A utility bill, for example) that does show your correct address.

Certified copy of State Issued Birth Certificate.
 
Passport, military identification or discharge papers which contain date of birth.

Age:
Applicants at least 18 years of age may marry without special consent. According to IC 31-11-2, persons who are 17 years of age must apply for the license with both parent(s) or the person with legal custody who must sign the consent portion of the application. Individuals 16 years of age or younger must petition the court as shown under IC 31-11-1-6.

Marriage Performed:
According to IC 31-11-6-1, members of the clergy may perform marriages (including a minister, priest, bishop, rabbi, imam, etc.) judge, magistrate, clerk or deputy clerk of the Circuit Court or a clerk or clerk-treasurer of a city or town. License Expiration:
A marriage license expires sixty (60) days after it is issued and is only valid in the State of Indiana. You will receive the license the same day that you apply.


Getting a Copy of your License:
Certified copies of your license are available in our office. The first copy is free. Additional copies are $2.00. You may obtain a copy by writing our office. Please include the maiden name of the bride, the groom's name and the date of the wedding. Include a check or money order for the correct fee.
