1. I don't have curbside recycling. Where and what can I recycle in Tippecanoe County?

The Tippecanoe Recycling and Solid Waste District provides free recycling drop off locations for any Tippecanoe household to use.  We have three rural drop-off bins:

• Southwestern Middle School on the western parking lot near the road
• Stockwell in the center of town next to the grain silos and the intersection of Commerce Drive, Yorktown, and Monroe Street
• East Tipp Middle School on the far eastern side of the campus off the access road to get to Hershey Elementary next to the baseball concession stand

All of these bins are emptied on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays but they still fill up very quickly.  There is a central recycling drop-off on the north side of Lafayette at the Trash Transfer Station at 2770 North 9th Street.  This location has bins for mixed materials (plastic, aluminum, and glass), as well as a separate bin for cardboard and paper.  This site is not accessible outside of business hours.  Their hours are MWF 7am-4pm, TTh 7am-6pm, and Sat 7am-1pm.  Below is an aerial image showing the layout of the transfer station to help you navigate.

2. How do I dispose of latex paint?

The Tippecanoe County Solid Waste Management District doe NOT take latex paint at our Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off.  Latex paint is non-toxic and can go in to your regular trash after it has been dried out and solidified.  Trash haulers will not pick up liquid paint because they get fined if they drip paint on the road.  They are very cautious about picking up paint if they think it might be liquid.  Please confirm with your trash hauler how they want dried paint cans. 

To dry latex paint for cans less than half full:

1. Pour clay cat litter or paint hardener (available at home improvement stores) in the paint can at 1:1 ratio.
2. Stir and leave the lid off for a day or two until the paint solidifies.

For full cans:

1. Line a box with a trash bag (make sure the bag does not have holes in it!)
2. pour the kitty litter or paint hardener in the box lined with a bag
3. Pour half of the paint in to the box with the kitty litter or paint hardener
4. Add cat litter or paint hardener to the paint remaining in the can
5. Mix each and allow to dry solid

3. Does Recycling and Solid Waste take televisions or other electronics?

Many electronics are prohibited from being sent to a landfill by Indiana state law.

We do not accept electronics for recycling on a regular basis at our 9th Street location.  There are several options for recycling electronics at other locations throughout the year.  Electronics stores such as Best Buy accept many electronics for recycling, and Oscar Winski E-recycling (765-421-6005) accepts materials from the public on the second Saturday of every month.  The Tippecanoe County Recycling and Solid Waste District holds an electronics recycling event twice per year and Tippecanoe residents are able to recycle electronics for free at this event.  Here is information about our electronics recycling event, typically held twice a year in the spring and fall.

4. What should I do with scrap metal?

We are lucky enough to have a locally owned scrap metal recycler located at 2407 N 9th Street in Lafayette.  Oscar Winksi will accept small amounts of all kinds of metals for free, and will reimburse you for the value of the metals in large loads of scrap metal.  Contact Oscar Winski Scrap Metal to learn more:  765-742-1102.

5. How do I get trash pick-up in the rural part of Tippecanoe County?

If you live outside the Lafayette City Limits or outside of the West Lafayette sewer system limits, you will need to arrange your own trash hauling service with a private company or bring your trash to the transfer station at 2770 N 9th Street to dispose of it for a fee.   The County Recycling and Solid Waste District does not provide trash hauling services.  There are several major trash hauling companies, and many smaller operations.  These are the major trash haulers in our area:

6. I own a small business. How do I recycle or dispose of my hazardous waste?

Businesses must provide their own recycling and hazardous waste disposal services.  There are several businesses in our region that can provide those services for a fee.  There is a locally owned recycling center in Frankfort, IN that will take loads of clean cardboard for free.  Werner Brothers Recycling can be contacted at 765-654-5070.

7. How is our County's recycling program funded?

It may surprise you, but it costs us money to get everyone's materials recycled!  The Tippecanoe County Recycling and Solid Waste District pays for the County's drop-off recycling program through property taxes.  The cardboard and paper from the compactors at the transfer station go directly to a recycler and we are able to recoup a very small amount of money from that, but it does not offset the cost of maintaining the compactors and transporting the recyclables.  The Recycling and Solid Waste District pays for the bins to be emptied, pays to transport the mixed recyclables to a sorting facility in Indianapolis or Muncie, and pays a sorting fee.  Trash and non-recyclables going in to the recycling bins increases our fees and takes up space in the bin.  Being a better recycler saves tax dollars!  More information on our funding can be found on our Public Documents page.
