Many people walking past our beautiful eclectic Neoclassical Courthouse have asked about the construction equipment and the scaffolding surrounding its dome. The current Courthouse Restoration Project started the week of July 4th, 2016 and is expected to be completed in October of 2017. Skilled workers are removing all existent paint from from the cast iron and sheet metal surface including Lady Justice who normally sits at the top of the dome. After the paint has been removed the cast iron and sheet metal surfaces will be repaired, joints will be sealed, and the roof of the bell cupola will be removed and replaced. After these repairs are complete all surfaces will be given 4 new coats of paint. Once this phase of the project is complete the entire Courthouse roof will removed and replaced including some of the skylights. Phase 2 of the project will include removing the paint from the sheet metal cornice work around the entire Courthouse and making necessary repairs to it as well as repairs to the limestone joints. The cornice work adorning the Courthouse will then be painted as well. Other work that will be performed during this two phase process includes restoring the Courthouse Fountain with it's statue of the Marquis De Lafayette and installing new exterior lighting. New lighting will illuminate the clock tower and dome as well as other focal points such as the fountain. The project should ensure that our Courthouse remains a beautiful and viable fixture in our downtown landscape for many generations to come.
